Hazira Port
One of the multi-cargo ports having a deep LNG terminal of water is Hazira Port. This operational LNG terminal is country’s largest terminal having export and storage capacity, 2.5 million tonnes. Shell Oil and French company have a joint venture here. There are plans to enhance the Total S.A. Storage as well as export capacity to 3.8 million tonnes by 2009 end.
There is a construction going on for a container terminal having capacity of handling 1 million TEU by a Singapore company known as PSA Corporation. There had been a beginning of production of naval craft, small ships by L&T shipyard in 2010, and has grown up rapidly into a popular shipyard.
The Hazira Terminal has storage of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) along with re-gasification terminal found in the port which is fully functional. The district of Surat in the state of Gujarat consists of Rs 3,000 crore Hazira LNG Terminal along with Port facilities and is considered to be a major foreign direct investment (FDI) project representing one of the biggest international investments in the country in the energy sector.
The Hazira Port is designed in such a way that it is the deep-water, direct berthing and all-weather port. It is located in Gujarat found on the West Coast of the country, around 25 km away from city of Surat and around 120 nautical miles to the north of city of Mumbai. The port is constructed with a harbour design quite protected, having additional waterfront for developing non-LNG terminals of cargo handling. Hazira (Surat) Port comprises of an approach channel of 1000m, dredged draft of 12.5 m and turning radius of 600 m capable of accommodating bigger vessels using tidal variance.
The Hazira Port of Surat is being planned as a ‘Gateway Port’ for serving the hinterlands of Northern, Western & Central part of India where one can expect the container traffic to grow rapidly. The Hazira (Surat) Port lies nearby the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) planned and there is high-speed dual carriageway built under project of the Golden Quadrilateral.
Location
The port consists of a great potential for serving as a 'Gateway Port' and caters to the diversified industry clusters found in the hinterlands of Northern, Western & Central parts of India. These hinterlands have a contribution of about 65% of India’s containerized traffic.
There is a strategic port location. The primary industrial clusters are found in the 200km radius of the port, in the belt of the Vadodara, Ankleswar, Vapi and Hazira. The industrially vibrant belt is honored to be the largest industrial cluster in the country. It is presumed that by the year 2012 this hinterland of the Hazira Port would generate container cargo traffic of say more than 1 million TEU, around 8% of the national container traffic. Besides, minimum of 12 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) lie in the Vadodara-Hazira belt, which results in enhancement of demand for facilities of container port.
Construction
Current Facilities
Built as a deep-water, direct berthing all-weather multi-cargo port, Hazira Port is being constructed with a harbor design quite protected, consisting of 2 breakwaters as well as an additional waterfront to develop facilities of non-LNG cargo handling. The Hazira (Surat) port which is fully functional having a short approach channel of about 1km and draft of about 12m has LNG jetty and an LNG storage as well as re-gasification terminal. It is operational since April 2005 having investment of USD 700 millions which is more than Rs. 3,000 crore, the Hazira LNG Terminal & Port is regarded as one of the largest investments of international Greenfield in the country.
The port of Adani Hazira Pvt Ltd comprises of 2 container jetties along with 3 multipurpose jetties which are additionally developed in the area of non LNG Port.
Future Development
The port has enough are for large port back up and water front, with adequate land for yards as well as an integrated logistics park, ample for developing of various terminals of non-LNG cargo and particularly container cargo terminals.
Other facilities being planned are Liquid Terminal, General Cargo and RoRo Car Carrier Terminals along with Shipyard & services to explore Offshore industry.
Turning Basin And LNG Berth Pocket
The port has a turning basin having a 300m radius to maneuver Tug assisted LNG-Carrier at the time of berthing as well as un-berthing. The basin and the LNG-Carrier berth are so deep that the LNG-Carrier can leave the berth for all the levels of water above CD + 0.7 m remaining in the berth pocket under all tidal conditions. The berth pocket is CD -13 m deep.
Rail And Road Connectivity
The port has links with NH-6 and NH-8 both which connect to arterial NH between Delhi & Mumbai. It further traverses to Central part of country. To improvise road logistics further, the government has plans for widening 6-lane of the current roads between port as well as the state and the national highways.
Various infrastructure initiatives have strengthened the Port linkages for major industrial as well as export hubs. Gujarat Industrial Development Board (GIDB) is being envisaging a corridor of multi-modal transport from Hazira Port to connect to road and rail trunk routes. Indian Railways has plans for connecting the port to Delhi-Mumbai Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) having 35 km spur line. This future linkage is going to improve connectivity of the port.
Facilities And Services
- For different weather operations there should be Artificial Protected harbor.
- A draft of about 12 m has to be there for initial dredged depth for accommodating vessels.
- 1000m length of approach channel.
- Southern spur providing a Quay length of around 1000 – 1700 m for the purpose of containers and around 600 m meant for bulk or break-bulk cargoes.
