The root of the music is derived from the nature lap in Uttarakhand. The music related to the nature is very pure and blessed. The life of the Uttarakhand is shown through folk music with tradition, festivals, and stories. The living style of people in Himalayas and their culture were shown through the folk songs in Uttarakhand.
The different area have different kind of folk songs such as melancholy thadya, jhoda, and khuded, mandal ceremony, and martial panwaras.
There were lots of musical instruments that were used for music like masakbhaja, turri, dhol, daur, ransingha, dholki, and bhankor. The lesser use of harmonium and Tabla also mentioned.
As the time passes, there were lots of changes and transformation in the form of development of music in state of Uttarakhand.

- Mohan Upreti is the well known person related to the folk music of Kumaon famous for Rajula Malu Shahi Ballad and Nanda Devi Jagar.
The basic identical song of the Uttarakhand is Bedu Pako Baro Masa sung by him for various years. This song is also known as the marching song and also heard by the Jawahar Lal Nehru in the band march and become his favorite song.
- With the melodious voice, the legend of the Kumaon is Shri Gopal Babu Goswami.
He sings the songs like Kaile baje muruli and Ghughuti na basa are legend on the family members life of armed forces and the women and their husbands started weeping when this song was played on the All India Radio that touches their heart and also the heard the touching voice of Gopal Daas.
- The famous voice of Garhwal is known as Shri Narendra Singh Negi.
One of the famous storyteller and balladeer is named as Chander Singh Rahi. There were very famous legends sing this by him and recording of his songs were very authentic in the hills.
