Thousands of years back, Tamil Nadu has long musical tradition and history. Music for the people of the Tamil Nadu is main cultural aspect. Over a long time period, the tradition of music developed from the popular film music and the classical Carnatic music.
Ancient Music
The music in the Tamil Nadu creates a long traditional history. All the literature of the classical Tamil and Sangam were set to the music of Tamil Nadu. In the music books like Ettuthokai and Pattupattu, the tradition of music is more prominent. Lots of musical forms practiced by the people of Tamil Nadu were described in the poem Cilappatikaram at the time period of Sangam. In the 6th and 10th century period of Hindu revival, various musical compositions in Tamil are utilized that are Manikkavasagar, Appar, and Thirugnana Sambanthar. Through the most famous composition in Tamil named Thiruppugazh by the famous poet Arunagirinathar, the Tamil music become more famous.
Carnatic Music
The classical form of South India music is named as Carnatic music has long and traditional history. The most famous form of classical dance Bharat Natyam was originated in Tamil Nadu as well as many popular performers also. In Chennai hundreds of artists were performed in a big event in the musical season of Madras.
On the Octave, there were varieties of melodies and about 72 basic scales. Structures of melody and rhythms were more convincing and varied. The musical tradition of the Tamil Nadu is very much rich and old in the world. Many of the famous artists composed the songs and that were going forward the next generation.
Various famous composers like Marimutthu Pilai, Arunachala Kavi, and the Muthu Thandavar that are members of Tamil Trinity makes lots of Tamil devotional songs and also contributes in the development of Carnatic music. The great composers of the 18th and 19th century that are Shyama Shastri, Muthuswami Dikshitar, and Tyagaraja made lots of songs that are still very popular among the audiences and remained their favorite.
Folk Music
Lots of traditional styles were used in the folk music and folk songs were quite popular in the state of Tamil Nadu and also this folk style is very much used in the filmy songs. There were few popular artists that gives their contribution to make the Tamil folk music more popular in Tamil Nadu and their names are Pushpavanam Kupuswamy and Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan.
Every hill tribes and rural region of Tamil Nadu has their own importance in the tradition of the folk music. For example, there is a melody named talams that is originates from the voice of birds through the Pulayar. The name of every talam is after the name of deity and they are Karaganachi talam, Mangalanada talam, and Kunhanada talam.

There were three famous names of the poets that are lyricist poet of the Tamil Christian named are N. Samuel of Tranquebar, Krishnapillai of Palyamkottai, and Vedanayagam Sastriar of Tanjore.
Tamil Christian poets were made this type of collections with the indigenous written hymns. Some of the Christian hymns were translated into the various other languages also.
In India, all kinds of hymns were written by these protestant Christianity in the early stages. All these kinds of hymns were used in the Tamil Churches for the worship with the denomination that is traditional. Ellam Yesuve and Mangalam Selika are the two more famous hymns.
