The district is also known as the City of Lakes and it is located at the South West of the capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur. The history of the city goes back to the year 1559 when it was founded by Maharana Uday Singh II. It was regarded as the final capital of the Mewar Empire which was situated on the bank of the Banas River.

The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations of India. The lakes and palaces situated in the city attract many domestic and foreign travellers. The famous lakes of the region are Fateh Sagar Lake, Rana Sagar Lake , Swaroopsagar Lake, Dudh Talai Lake and the famous Pichola Lake.

The eastern bank of this Pichola Lake consists of series of Palaces and the balconies of these palaces actually provide a wonderful view of the famous Lake Palace Hotel also known as the Jag Niwas. There are also views of the Jag Mandir on one side of city.

Udaipur was named the Best City of the World by Travel and Leisure in the year 2009 and consequently it is also known as the “Venice of East”. It is a popular destination for many international movie shoots and the historical significance of the city has made its place in many novels written over the years.
