The district is also called “Nawabi Nagari” for its historical legends and this has essentially made the region not only famous in Rajasthan but all over India. It is located about 100 km from Jaipur and located on the National Highway No 12. The district covers an area of about 7194 sq km. It is surrounded by five districts in form of Jaipur in the north, Tonk and Bhilwara in the South, Ajmer in the eastern borders while in the western side it has the district called Sawaimadhopur.

The main occupations of the people of Tonk are agriculture and husbandry. The average rainfall of the region is as low as 62 mm and that sometime makes life difficult for the farmers. But the region has some historical significance. According to the history Man Singh the king of Jaipur conquered the regions of Tari and Torka Janpad when Akbar was the emperor. In the year 1643, Bhola Brahmin was gifted twelve villages of the Torka Janpad, which he later collectively started to call Tonk. Thus it can be seen that the history of the place is very old and is linked with the Bhairath culture and their civilization. In 1806 Amir Khan conquered the region from Balvat Rao soon after which the British Government took over the region. But there was a treaty between Amir Khan and the British Government so in 1817 the Government again returned the control to Amir Khan.
