Jodhpur district is one of the longest districts and it is also said to be the heart of Rajasthan. According to a legend in Jodhpur the Rathore tradition comes under the origin and family of Lord Rama.

Hence, the Rathores who belong to Suryavansha also known as solar race branch of the Kshatriyas. In 15th century the city of Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodha. Under the Rathore Rajput dynasty, Jodhpur served as the capital of kingdom of Mewar.

The district is bounded by Bikaner district on to the north, Nagaur district on the northeast, Ajmer district on south and southeast, Pali district on the southwest and on the west and northwest by Jaisalmer district. Jodhpur city is the administrative headquarters of the district.
