Bharatpur district is located in western part of Rajasthan. The district administrative headquarters is located in the city of Bharatpur and also the headquarters of Bhatapur division. The total area of this district is 5,066km. Bharatpur district is bounded by Rewari and Gurgaon districts of Haryana on the north, Rajasthan districts of Dholpur on the south, Dausa and Alwar on the west, Mathura and Agra districts of Uttar Pradesh on the east and Karauli on the southwest.

Maharaj Suraj Mal was the founder of this place, earlier that was known as Mewat. After the period of Ramayana, Mewat was named as Bharatpur after Bharat who was a younger brother of Lord Rama.

There are three rivers that cross Bharatpur district namely, Rooparel, Gambhir and the Ban Ganga. In Bharatpur there are three common languages that are spoken by people is Hindi, English and Brij-Bhasha.

Bharatpur district is famous for Keoladeo National Park that attracts many tourists. In the winter season a major variety of migratory birds visit this place from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Siberia, China and Tibet. Maharajas of Bharatpur build up a duck-hunting reserve. In the era of British Empire, this district was known for as the best place to hunt ducks. The place has been listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage Site
