Baran district is one of the districts of Rajasthan State western India. The district headquarters is located in the city of Baran. Majority of present day Baran district was under the rule of Princely state of Kota. The total area of this district is 6,995 sq.km.

Geographically, Baran is bounded by Madhya Pradesh state on the north and east side, on to the south and southwest by Jhalawar district of Rajasthan and on the west and north by kota district of Rajasthan.

Before India’s independence most of the Baran district of today, was the part of princely state of Kota. The rulers of the princely states joined the Indian republic. Today’s Baran district was a part of Kota district after Indian Independence. In the year 1991 April 10, Baran district was carved out of Kota district.
