Suburban

Suburban Railway is a passenger rail system that operates in large cities from city center to the outer most periphery of the city and peripheral towns to help commuters from these far flung places to come to work at the city center which is usually the Business District of the City. Such train services are found all over the world. In India all the four metros Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai have this very useful and successful Rail system in place.

The popularity of these trains has increased with the growing awareness of pollution, rising fuel costs, difficulty in maintaining and parking vehicles.

The Mumbai Suburban Railway system, is the backbone of urban transport in Mumbai. This Railway system has been a part of the history of Indian Railways since it was the first train to run its course on Indian soil. The two zonal Railways Western and Central Railway run two lines carrying more than 6.9 million passengers daily, half of the total daily passengers of the entire Indian Railways. Referred to as local trains or simply as locals by the Mumbai citizens, the Mumbai Suburban Railway is now on the verge of breakdown because of overcrowding and other safety issues.

The Kolkata Suburban Railway is the rail system connecting the city of Kolkata (Calcutta) to the suburbs surrounding the city. The  Suburban Railway in Kolkata are run by the Eastern Railway and South Eastern Railway Just as in all the other Metros where Suburban Railway systems operate, the Kolkata  Suburban Railways are overused . The other means of transport such as the Kolkata Metro Rail and the Kolkata Circular Railway augment the transportation services.

The Chennai suburban railway is a commuter rail system of Chennai (Madras) which is operated by the Southern Railway. This Suburban Railway is complex as it uses Electrical Multiple Units operating on AC current drawn from overhead cables. The total system spans over 900 kms of which only 286 kms are dedicated duel tracks for EMUs. The rest share tracks with mainline trains and are called mainline EMUs.

The Delhi Suburban Railway service is a commuter rail service operated in the National Capital Region of Delhi  by Northern Railway zone of the Indian railways.  This Suburban service covers the city state of Delhi,  and the adjoining satellite towns of Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak and Rewari in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh States. These services are mostly run using EMU (Electrical Multiple Units)and MEMU (Mainline Electrical Multiple Units) rakes.
