South Eastern Railway
With headquarters in Garden Reach, Kolkata, South Eastern Railway is one of the sixteen zones of the Indian Railway. It comprises of Adra, Chakradharpur, Kharagpur, Nagpur Divisions and the new Ranchi Division.
History
The South Eastern Railway came into existence on August 1, 1955 when the Bengal Nagpur Railway became a new zone. Thus the history of South Eastern Railway runs parallel to the history of the Bengal Nagpur Railway that is more than hundred and fifty years long. In July, 1967, Bankura Damodar River line merged with the South Eastern Railway. Till 2003, South Eastern Railway had eight divisions, but after the reorganization of Zones took place in 2003, the new zone , East Coast Railway was carved out of the South Eastern Railway and four out of the eight divisions went to the East Coast Railway. They were Sambalpur, Khurda Road, Visakhapatnam and Kharagpur.
Present Status
The South Eastern Railway serves the states of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa. It also runs local services using Electrical Multiple Units or EMUs to areas around Kolkata such as: Howrah to Kharagpur, Amta, Medinapur, Tatanagar, from Santragachi to Shalimar. Major freight traffic routes in this area are also serviced by the Zone.
Workshops
- The South Eastern Railway has many workshops and sheds for maintenance.
- Electric Multiple Unit sheds : Tikiapara and Panskura.
- Electric locomotive sheds : Santragachi, Tatanagar, and Bondamunda.
- Diesel locomotive sheds: Kharagpur, Bokaro Steel City, and Bondamunda.
- Coach maintenance yard : Santragachi.
- Maintenance workshop : Kharagpur
South Eastern Railway has been the mainstay of the industrial development and growth carrying freight minerals, industrial raw material and food grains. It also operates many important passenger trains Mail /Express connecting the places of the Zone to all the important cities and towns in the country.
