North Eastern Railway
History
Formed on 14 April 1952 by the merger of the Oudh and Tirhut Railway , Assam Railway and the Kanpur – Achnera section of the BB &CI (Bombay Baroda and Central India ) Railway, the North Eastern Railway is one of the sixteen Railway Zones of the Indian railway. It was further divided into two Railway Zones on 15 January, 1958; the North Eastern Railway and the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Present Status
The North Eastern Railway (NER) as it is known now, after the re-organisation of Railway Zones in 2002, comprises three Divisions ;Varanasi, Lucknow and Izatnagar. The headquarters of North Eastern Railway are in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. North Eastern Railway primarily serves the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarkhand and the western districts of Bihar with 3,402.46 route km and 486 stations connecting important cultural, religious and tourist places like Varanasi, Sarnath, Lucknow, Allahabad, Kushinagar, Lumbani, Ayodhaya, Nainital, Ranikhet, Kausani and Dudhwa to almost all important cities of India.
It is one of the most progressive zones being the first to include and incorporate application of progressive modern technology in the functional and administrative activities of the Zone for improved safety and efficiency along with convenience and comfort of passengers.
- Computerized passenger reservation system was first introduced in North Eastern Railway in 1986.
- Modern facilities such as Interactive Voice Response Systems (IVRS), Electronic Display Systems, Recorded Coach Guidance Display System, Reservation Availability Position Information Display (RAPID), Self Dial Telephone Reservation Enquiry Booths (I ASK), Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) and Money Changing Facilities are also available now at Stations.
- Computerized Self Printing Ticket Machines have been installed at important stations for issue of unreserved and platform tickets to avoid the inconvenience of long queues at Booking Windows.
- Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) has been introduced at some stations whereby passengers can purchase an unreserved ticket 3 days in advance from the current booking counters.
- To revamp and augment the communication system, optic fiber has been laid along the track on route kms of Northern Eastern Railway. Optic Fiber is believed to be the future of safe and efficient communication systems.
- The basic interlocked system has been changed to the Route Relay Interlock system which also included the Main RRI for enhancing efficiency and safety in operations. In fact, North Eastern Railway has the largest RRI system in the world, a fact certified by the Guiness World Records Ltd.
