Patiala was one of the princely states on India. The headquarters of the district is the city of Patiala. The origin of the city is not clear though there are opinions to relate the area to vedic culture.

Its area is 3625 sq. kms. Its land can be classified as The Upland Plain, The Cho-infested Foothill Plain and The Floodplain of the Ghaggar River. The ghaggar river and ite many tributaries are the main sources of water in the district.

More than 75% of the land is utilized for agricultural purposes. Wheat, barley, paddy, maize, sugarcane are among the chief vegetation in the district. There also are industries in the area owing to the economic improvement of the areas. Few industries in the area are power cables, Vanaspati ghee, bicycles and agriculture implements and harvester combines and threshers, milk products, pesticides etc.

The climate is typical with hot summers and colder winters. Ay and January are the hottest and coldest months respectively for the district. The average annual rain is 688 mms.

Banur, Samana, Sanaur are few of the places of importance. The city of sanaur is said to be related to Lord Sri Rama’s time. There is a fort named Ramgarh in memory of that.
