Muktsar district is part of the north western state of Punjab. Its headquarters is located in the city Muktsar Saheb city. The city is a city of historical prominence. It has derived its name from an incident in history. In 1705 AD the sikh saint, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, battled his last against Mughals here. 40 of his disciples were killed in the battle. The name is in memory of the ‘40 Muktas’ (40 liberated ones)who  sacrificed their lives.

The area of the district is 2615 sq. kms. The south western monsoon causes 70% of the rainfall in the district during the months of July to September. June is the hottest month when temperatures soar as high as 45 degree Celsius, and December is the coldest with temperatures falling as low as 2 degree Celsius.

The birthplace of Second Guru, Guru Angad Dev ji is located just 15kms from Sri Muktsar Sahib. Tuti Gandi Gurudwara Sahib, Tibbi Sahib, Gurudawra Rakab sar, Gurudwara Taran Taran Sahib, Angooran Wali maseed, Gurdwara Guptsar Sahib etc are prominent places of tourist, historical and religious significance.

Maghi mela is a bug fair in the district. It is celebrated after Lohri every year. The district is agri based. Paddy, Wheat, Sugarcane, Oilseeds, Pulses and vegetables are chiefly cultivated in this area.
