Ludhiana district is the largest district of Punjab state. Its headquarters is located in the city of Ludhiana. It was founded by the rulers of the Lodhi dynasty in the 15th century. It even was an important city of Akbar’s regime. However in 1809, the local Rajput king of the area signed an agreement with the English.

It falls under the malwa region of the state. It is geographically located between north Latitude 30o-34' and 31o-01' and east longitude 75o-18' and 76o-20'. River Sutlej on the north separates the district from the district of Jalandhar. The district terrain can be divided as the flood plain of the Sutlej and the up land plain. The district is an Alluvial plain.

The district experiences a hot climate for most part of the year and a brief monsoon. The winter season that extends from mid-November to early-March, is pleasant. Hottest climate is experienced in June. Hot and scorching wind storms are characteristic of the summer season. December & January are the chiller. The district experiences the southwest monsoon rains (70 % from July to September).

The Sutlej and its tributary, the budha nallah are the chief sources of flowing water in the district. However these rivers are polluted in the district due to industries.
