Faridkot district was formed in 1972 as part of the state of Punjab. It was named after Baba Farid, a god-lover who wanted see God. The headquarters of Faridkot is Faridkot city. Faridkot was part of Bhatinda till 1972 and after that the district was formed separately. The district is surrounded by Ferozpur, Muktasar, Bathinda and Moga.

The history of Faridkot can be traced back to the period of Indus Valley civilization. Faridkot was under the Rawal Jaisal, who founded Jaisalmer.

The climate of Faridkot district is classified as semi-arid and sub-tropical. It is characterized by hot summers, moist monsoons and cold winters. 449cms of average rainfall is received in the district.

Baba Sheikh Farid Aagman Purb, celebrating the visit of the Sufi Prophet is one of the major festivals celebrated in the district. Qilla Mubarak is an old fort famous for its impressive structural and architectural beauty with a beautiful garden inside the complex. The Raj Mahal Palace is a heritage site.

The Gurudwara Tilla Baba Farid and the Gurudwara Godari Sahib are two important religious places in the area of Faridkot district. The Darbar Gank, the Fairy, and the Check Tower at the Fairy Cottage entrance are other tourist attractions in the city.
