Amritsar district is located in the state Punjab. Amritsar District was known as Patti Pargana during the Last Sikh Raj of Punjab. In 1849 Amritsar district was created because of the annexation of Punjab Sikh Kingdom. Its name was derived from the river ‘Amrit sarovar’, the lake surrounding the world famous Golden Temple of Armitsar which is the holy place for Sikhs. Its headquarters is the city of Amritsar.

The people of this district with much pomp and show celebrate the fairs and festivals. Baisakhi, the festival of spring and also the day that Guru Gobind Singh found the Khalsa panth and the Guru Nanak Jayanti are celebrated.

Winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon are the four seasons. Amritsar district experiences an extreme climates such as hot months in summers and cold winters. The Indo-Pakistan is just 28 kilometers from here. People throng here to witness the flag-hoisting ceremony and the change of guards ceremony by both the countries’ border security forces. The Jalianwala Bagh, Durgiana Mandir are famous tourist spots. It is believed that the nine-storied Baba Rai Tower is where Guru Hargobind Singh breathed last.

It is well connected to the major cities by road, rail and air. October and March could be the best time to visit for tourists.
