Jawaharlal Nehru
Pt. Nehru was the very 1st Prime Minister of free India. He stayed at this pedestal post for 17 years and in many instances is referred to as the true architect of India. It is he who put India on the righteous path of democracy. He engineered multi-party systems and encouraged freedom of press. Pt. Nehru was also well known for giving a boost to all Panchayati institutions.
Early Life and Academics
Jawaharlal Nehru, the son of Swarup Rani and Motilal Nehru, was born on 14th November 1889. Jawaharlal studied at the Cambridge in England from the age of 15 onwards. He later came back to India in the year 1912.
Family and Personal Life
The eldest of the 3, Nehru has a pretty sheltered childhood. He and his siblings were privileged to enjoy the atmosphere of palatial homes. They themselves lived at Anand Bhawan which was no less than a palace in itself. Nehru's father educated Nehru under the guidance of a tutor.
In 1916, Nehru was married to Kamla Kaul. Their daughter Indira was conceived in 1917. Nehru and Kamala also had a baby boy but the child couldn't survive. It is alleged that Nehru was involved in relationships with Edwina Mountbatten. Pamela, Edwina's daughter has acknowledged the platonic relationship herself.
Nehru was very fond of children and this is the reason why his birth date is celebrated across India as Children’s day. Nehru was very fond of writing and wrote many books.
Career
After receiving education in England, Nehru was enrolled in 1912 to England's bar. He also practiced law for many years in India after that. Post the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Nehru took it upon himself to invest all his time in setting India free from the clutches of the British. Since he was a good orator and was very close to M.K. Gandhi, Nehru became the face of Indian National Congress (INC). In 1929, Nehru was elected as the president of INC. As a radical leader from 1930 onwards, Nehru spent 6 years in and out of jail for being part to many campaigns pertaining to civil disobedience movements. In 1939, Gandhi and he hit a rough patch. Nehru started to oppose the ideology that Gandhi had. However during World War II, the two united to oppose the British and sought for immediate freedom. 3 years thereafter, he was imprisoned. After he was released in 1945, he was the one who initiated negotiations with the British to create Pakistan and India in the year 1947.
Nehru was appointed as the PM of India and was also the foreign affairs minister who led India through its most difficult times post-independence. Nehru was known for adopting a neutral policy and usually emphasized on the importance of having non-aligned nations. Nehru was also known for opposing the idea of military alliances.
