Sundargarh district is a part of Odisha state. The district lies to the northwestern part of Odisha. The district is surrounded by Raigarh and Jashpur districts of Chhattisgarh and Simdega, Sambalpur and Deogarh districts of Odisha.

The total area of the district is 9712 sq. km. It is the second largest districts in the state of Odisha. The district was part of two princely states in Odisha before independence. These were Gangpur and Bonaigarh. The region was under the South Kosala kingdom during ancient times. Bonaigarh or Bonai Mandala was under the Mayura dynasty. Gangpur was ruled by the Parmar dynasty. These places came under the reign of Marathas of Nagpur during the medival period.

Kisan tribe is one of the largest tribes in the district. The main profession of this tribe is farming and food gathering. Sundargadi is the native language in this region. The language is very similar to Sambalpuri language. The district is full of places such as uneven hills, water streams in those hills, forests, etc. The main rivers in the region include Ib and Brahmani. The average height of the elevation in the hills is 2000 ft.

Sundargarh has industries such as Rourkela Steel Plant, Rajganpur has a cement plant and many small and textile industries.
