Rayagada district is in the southern part of Odisha. The area of the district is 7584 sq. km. The place was once part of Kalinga empire during the time of Ashoka. Evidences have been found which suggest the same. The place was ruled by Rastriks. The region was later ruled by Bahamanis in 1519. The place was also under the Bobbili, present day Andhra Pradesh during the time of Vijayanagara Rayas. During the British rule, Rayagada was under the Jeypore administration.

Rayagada district is known for the tribal population in the district. The district is full of bauxite deposits. Rayagada sits on a gold mine of Bauxite.

• Maa Majhighariani Temple: The temple lies in the border of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The place is visited by many people from Odisha, Andhra, Chhattisgarh, etc.
• Hatipattar: Hatipattar is a very good picnic spot. The place has waterfalls from river Nagavali. The boulders on the hills seem like elephants. Thus the name Hatipattar.
• Pakipada: Pakipada is very famous locally for the number of Shiva Lingams that are present here. The place has temples for Jaganath, Dhakineswar Kalika, Samudra, etc. The place is visited by pilgrims in thousands during Shivratri.
• Chatikona: Chatikona is also another wonderful picnic spot. The place is filled with valleys and hills covered with forests. The place also has a temple dedicated to Lord Mahadev. There is a waterfall which is a feast to the eyes.
