Malkangiri district is one of the districts in the western part of Odisha State. The district was formed by dividing the Koraput district in the year 1992. The district occupies an area of 5,791 sq.kms and lies at 17°45'N to 18°40'N latitudes and 81°10'E to 82° E longitude. Malkangiri can be divided on the basis of geography such as steep Ghats, plateaus, valleys, plains surrounded by rocky wooded hills, etc.

The region is full of tribes and is believed that the tribal people inhabited the place almost 2500 year back in the forests. The place is home to tribes such as Bonda, Dibayi, Koya, Gadaba, Halva, etc. The old name of the place was Malyavantangiri. As time passed by the name got corrupted to Malkangiri. It is even believed that here in this region, saint Valmiki had written Ramayana.

Some of the minerals that are found in Malkangiri are granite, shale, quartzite, sandstone, limestone, charnockite, slate, phyllite, marble, dolomite, asbestos, tin and steatite, etc.

• Balimela: Balimela, place 35 km from Malkangiri, is home to hydro-electric power station.
• Bonda Hills: Bonda hills is home to the tribe Bondas, a primitive tribe of the place. The place has a relevance in the epic Ramayana, as Sita was bathing in a lake, the locals laughed at her and earned a curse from Sita.
• Ammakonda: Ammakonda is a tourist spot which attracts many tourists. The place has a waterfall where water flows and forms a pond. It is believed that the first avatar of Vishnu, Matsyavatar took place here and the locals and the tourists do not fish but feed the fish here.
• Other places include Motu, Satiguda Dam, Manyam konda and other hill temples.
