Koraput is a southern district in Odisha. The district is located in the Eastern Ghats bordering Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states. The area of the district is 8379 sq. kms. The district lies between 17. 4° and 20.7° N Latitudes and 81.24.4° and 84.2° E Longitudes.

The history of the place dates back to 3rd century BC. The region was under the Kalinga empire. After the downfall of the Kalinga empire, other dynasties such as Satavahanas, Ikshavakus, Nalas, Gangas, Surya Vanshi ruled the region. The district was merged into the state of Orissa in the year 1936.

Some parts of the district namely, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Nabrangpur were part of the Koraput district. But, they were separated from Koraput and formed separate districts in the year 1992.

Koraput district has a blend of Andhra as well as Oriya cultures. Some of the places for tourism include

• Duduma Waterfall: Duduma waterfall, which is also called Matsya Tirtha is a wonderful place to visit. The water slides from a height of 175 meters. Ankadeli, a village nearby is a place which draws tourists to the place for the weekly markets being held on Thursdays.
• Gupteswar: Gupteswar is a cave shrine of Lord Shiva on a limestone hill located near river Kolab.
• Dumuriput: Dumuriput is a small village near Koraput and Sunabeda. The place is famous for Lord Hanuman’s statue. This is the highest kneeling statue of Hanuman in Odisha.
• Museum: A Government Museum in the place has been established which displays the artifacts and antiquities. The museum has a good collection of Jain artifacts and iconography.
