Jharsuguda district is part of the state of Orissa. It was formed on 1st January 1994.  Earlier it was part of the Sambalpur district. The headquarters of the district is the town of the same name. the average rainfall in the area is 218.8 mms. The district lies between 21° 54' 49N latitude and 84° 3' 1E longitude.

Hostorical evidence names the area as ‘Jharguda’. In the 16th century the district area was awarded to one Siva Singh, by the 7th king of Sambalpur of the Chauhan dynasty, Chhatrasai Dev. The family of Siva Singh held the area under control till the end of the 18th century. In 1833 the area was captured by the British. The district was included in the newly formed Province of Orissa in 1905.

It is spread across an area of 2081 sq. kms. The district is considered very rich in mineral resources.Ranjhta festival, ratha yatra of kukurjanga, Rajpur’s Gokulashtami fair, and jagannatha Sabitha Rathayatra of BElapur are famous celebrations across the district.

The rock paintings in Bikramkhol(4000 BC), the runed hill fort in Ulapgarh, the Padmasini Mandir in Padampur, Ramchandi, Ramchandi, Jhadeshwar temple at Jharsuguda, Koilighughar falls, the Kolabira fort, Sri Pahadeshwar temple etc are chief tourist and pligrimage attractions in the district.
