The district was named after the Sabara Chief ‘Dhenka’, whose rule was over this land. Historical rocks date the area back to as old as 2nd century AD. In total the area was ruled by 18 kings and was finally declared part of the Indian Union in 1947.

The area of the district is 4452 sq.kms. It lies between latitudes 20° 29' to 21° 11' North and longitudes 85° 58' to 86° 2' East.  The average rainfall in the district is 1428.8 mm. the district experiences three seasons, Summer(March-May), Monsoon(June-November) and Winter(November-February). April, May are the hottest months and December, January are the coldest.

Most land of the district is forests and is home for many wild animals like the elephants and the tigers, etc. Sabara, shaura, munda etc are the chief tribes of the area. Agriculture and Animal Husbandry are chief occupations in the region. Paddy, sugarcane, Groundnut, Potato, Biri are few of the chiefly cultivated crops.

The forests also add economic value to the state because of its produce of Timber, Bamboo, Fire wood, Kendu leaf, Lac, Honey, Kenduli Gum, Wax, Mahua flower, Sunari fark, Siali Leaves, Catechus, Tassar Cocoons and others. Few industries in the district are Nilachal Refractories, Utkal Asbestos Ltd, Orissa Polyfibres Ltd ,Shakti sugar.
