The district lies across an area of 3932 sq.kms. it derives its name from its headquarters. The headquarters was mainly meant to be a military cantonment. Hence the name ‘katak’.

The city was the capital city for many ages. It started to be the capital in the 10th century AD. It served in that role for the rulers of the Somavanansi dynasty(10th century), Gange dynasty(12th century), the Gajapati rulers, the Mugals etc.

The inscriptions of Anangabhimana Deva III (who constructed the Baramati Fort in the city of Cuttack) call the city as Abhinab Banarasi’, meaning New Varanasi. It is so because of its geographically being situated between the rivers Mahanadi and Kathajodi.

The Maratha rulers of Nagpur used the city as an important centre for trade and commerce with the then English businessmen of the Bengal and the Northern Circar. In 1803, the area was acceded to the control of the English as per the terms of the Treaty of Deogaon.

The city was host to the first newspaper printed in the state of Orissa,Utkal Dipika in 1866. The Ravenshaw University holds a history as old as the year 1841.  The city acted as the capital of the Orissa Province in 1936.
