History
There is powerful historical background of Delhi which is the India’s national capital. Some of the most powerful emperors in the Indian history had ruled this city over the centuries.
As history describes the history of this city and the epic Mahabharata are almost similar. It was known as Indraprastha for once and as history explains epic warriors Pandavas would stay here once upon a time. In fact eight more cities developed nearby Delhi to expand it arena which included Lal Kot, Dinpanah, Quila Rai Pithora, Siri, Ferozabad, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad and Shahjahanabad amongst others.
This city has also seen too much turmoil on political grounds in the last five centuries when various rulers ruled it. Some prominent rulers were Mughals, Khiljis and Tughlaqs before British controlled it.
The Delhi Sultanate was established in 1206 few years later than the Afghan warrior, Muhammad of Ghori took initiative to capture this Rajput town in 1192. The Sultanate though ended with the Timur’s invasion of Delhi in the year 1398. It was at that juncture that ,one of the last sultans of Delhi, the Lodis smoothened the way for Babur to rule this place. He founded the Mughal Empire post Panipat War in 1526. Agra was the preferred location for capital for early Mughal emperors to rule Delhi but this city was chosen as permanent seat of governance after 1638 when King Shah Jahan built Old Delhi walls.
The reins of Delhi city constantly shifted from one ruler to other that included Hindu Kings and Muslim Sultans ruling it in different periods. If understood philosophically then it is undeniable that city’s soil still smell of blood, nationhood and incessant sacrifices. Although old 'Havelis' or structures from the old era remain silent spectator today but their quietness mention much about them and their owners inhabiting there for several centuries.
The British captured India in 1803 AD and brought Delhi under its rule. The British choose Delhi over Calcutta as capital in 1911 for better governance and control. It was the major leap form then as this city finally became important place for governance thereafter. This city has overthrown several kingdoms and rules over the centuries. Some such rulers were the British and various political parties in democratic setup as well who rule India as an independent country.
Delhi was officially declared as Indian capital post country’s independence in 1947.
Transport

Travelling from one place to the other in Delhi through bus is a good deal as a cheaper option to enjoy. It is possible because of the large network of buses running at almost all parts of the city. The type of bus would determine trip quality though and so do influence traffic level on the routes in which travelling.
Delhi Auto Rickshaws
Although there is no dearth of auto rickshaws in Delhi city where they are available in plenty but it often becomes difficult to insist them to put the meters on while journeying. Have a clear cut idea about the rates as most drivers would quote the fare in their deals for a good deal on the journey.
Delhi Taxis
Taxis are slightly more expansive but remains good option as an alternative choice to travel instead of auto rickshaws. There is choice to pick the taxis from any street or book them through phone for a travel option of your choice.

Red Fort
- Location: In Old Delhi and opposite to Chandni Chowk area.
- Entry Cost: Adults to pay Rs. 250 or $5 while children under 15 years are permitted free entry.
- Opening Hours: The timings are from sunrise until sunset. Monday is off day.
- Sound & Light Show: Run in English language its timings are 7.30 pm during November to January months while January to April is the period when timings are from 8.30 pm but it changes to 9 pm from September to October and May to August months.
Red Fort is one of the prominent monuments in Delhi which remains a hallmark of Mughal architecture and showcase their rule in the country. More than 2 kilometer stretched walls of this fort was built to stop invaders. It was completed in 1638. Although such arrangement was done but still Sikhs and British captured this fort in the later years. One hour long sound and light show held each evening takes tourists back to the past era through clear cut defining of glorious past.
Jama Masjid
- Location: Located opposite Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, it is close to the Red Fort.
- Entry Cost: No charge applicable except camera fee.
- Opening Hours: Remains open daily and closes prior to sunset and during the prayer timings which are usually from 12.15 to 1.45 p.m.
Being the largest mosque in the country, Jama Masjid remains an important gem in the Old Delhi. The courtyard of this mosque has an area where approximately 25,000 devotees can gather together for an incredible accommodation. Completed in 1650, this mosque was built in a time period of 13 years. When climbed to its top energetically then one can witness from the southern tower impressive rooftop view is observed to feel the Delhi’s atmosphere. Make it a point to remain well dressed while entering mosque or else you would be stopped to step inside. It is important to cover head, shoulders and legs if coming inside. Get desired attires which are easily available there.
Chandni Chowk
- Location: Nearby both Red Fort and Jama Masjid in Old Delhi.
There is big contrast between the well organized and orderly New Delhi area and the major street in the Old Delhi named Chandni Chowk. Its narrow space usually remains rushed by cars, hand-pulled carts, pedestrians, cycle rickshaws and most often stray animals. Although it is too much chaotic due to high congestion and crumbling scenes but equally do they seek attention of tourists. It is known for being the oldest market in India which is also a busiest where shoppers buy cheap jewelries, electronics and fabrics et al. Enjoy best street food in Chandni Chowk where which is true adventure taking feel for once-in-a-lifetime food taste. Famous Karim Hotel is the major food destination in the region located here itself.
Humayun's Tomb
- Location: Located in Nizamuddin East and close to New Delhi’s Nizamuddin Station it is on off Mathura Road area.
- Entry Cost: Charges are $5 or 250 rupees for adults but children under 15 years are free.
- Opening Hours: Daily timings are from sunrise to sunset and can be perfectly viewed in late afternoon while light turn golden.
You might feel that there is too much similarity between Humayun's Tomb and Taj Mahal in Agra. It is true because the fact is that creation of Taj Mahal had its motivation for architecture. Built in 1570, this tomb accommodates second Mughal emperor Humayun’s body. Tomb was unique Mughal architecture  in Indian subcontinent. It followed with rest Mughal architects from many buildings built in various parts of India during that period. It is huge complex where tomb and amazing gardens are worth exploring.
Lodi Gardens
- Location: Close to Humayun's Tomb it is located at the Lodi Road.
- Entry Cost: No charge applicable.
- Opening Hours: Remains open every but busiest days are during Sundays.
Offering peaceful retreat from the busy life of the city, Lodi Gardens remains worth enjoying where there is total comfort and rejuvenation post tired condition. The British had built this splendid Garden during 1936 nearby the tombs that had been built by the rulers of 15th and 16th centuries. This park is prominent destination for joggers, yoga practitioners and youngsters especially couples.
