Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park

The Kasu Brahmananda Reddy usually know as KBR National Park was known as Chiran Palace earlier. It is located at the Jubilee Hill in Hyderabad city. In the year 1960, Chiran Palace was constructed sovering an area of 400 acre. The palace complex was given as a gift to Prince Mukarram Jah by his father Prince Azam Jah in the year 1967 on the occasion of his coronation.

The present name was given to the park after the name of the former chief minister of the state of Andhra Pradesh Kasu Brahmananda Reddy. The park is covering an area of 150 hectares and has been established with the aim to safeguard the biodiversity of this region. The Chiran Palace which now belongs to the former Hyderabad’s Nizam is located here.

This park houses a a large variety of wildlife. There are around six hundred species of flora found here. There are many herbs, shrubs, creepers and climbers. Few xerophytes and pteridophytes are also found here. Around one hundred and thirteen bird species and twenty species of mammals, fifteen species of butterfly and twenty reptile species along with a wide range of invertebrates are found here.

The large mammals are not found in the premises of the KBR National Park. Small Jungle and palm civets can be spotted here. The park offers an Urban refuge for some rare fauna species like Jungle cats, monitor lizards, wild boars and many snake varieties are also found here.

History

The palace complex was given as a gift to Prince Mukarram Jah by his father Prince Azam Jah in the year 1967 on the occasion of his coronation. The present name was given to the park after the name of the former chief minister of the state of Andhra Pradesh Kasu Brahmananda Reddy. The park is covering an area of 150 hectares and has been established with the aim to safeguard the biodiversity of this region. The Chiran Palace which now belongs to the former Hyderabad’s Nizam is located here.

The Mor (Peacock)  bungalow  other than the Chiran Palace is also constructed here on a hillock. The park also houses Gol Bungalow, which has stables for horses, elephants, cattle. The motorkhana house located in the park housed a fleet of beautiful vintage cars along with a workshop, few outhouses, petrol pump, two wells and water tanks.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh declared the entire park as a national park after getting approval from the Central Government in 1998. As a result the forest department took control of the major portion of this area and only eleven acresof land was left under the control of Nizam.  It was further reduced to six acres. Later the park was renamed as to Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park.

Best Time To Visit

The park is open all the year round and the best time to visit the park throughout the year. The temperature of the park is always found to be low because of presence of the dense trees and foliage in the park. The park has a cool and fresh environment irrespective of the hot and humid climate found in the city.  The maintenance crew has well maintained the park offering all the facilities.

How To Get There

By Air: Begumpet is the nearest airport to the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park. This airport is located at a distance of five kilometers from the railway station of Secunderabad. The flights of Indian airlines connect the airport to Hyderabad and all the major cities.

By Rail / train: the nearest railaway stations to the park are Hyderabad station, located at a distance of ten kilometres from the park, Secunderbad and Begumpet stations.

By road / local transport: The nearest terminal of APSRTC is at Goliguda in Hyderabad at a distance of 16 kilometers.

Bird Safari:Many species of birds are found here. One can get full entertainment by bird watching in the park.

Jungle Safari:Jungle safari can be done to explore the flora and fauna of the region.

Nature Walks/ Jogging: Nature lovers can enjoy a walk and even jogging in morning or evening.

Photography: One can go for wild life photography as camera is permitted inside the park premises.

Weather

The weather is pleasant throughout the year. The temperature of the park is always found to be low because of presence of the dense trees and foliage in the park. The park has a cool and fresh environment irrespective of the hot and humid climate found in the city. the summer season lasts from the month of March to May. The temperature ranges between 25°C and 35°C. From November to February, the park experiences the winter months. And the temperature ranges between 22°C to 14°C

Monsoons start in the month of June and lasts till September. The rainfall is medium with heavy winds.
