Nizam Museum
Nizam Museum is a wonderful museum at Hyderabad, located at the famous Purani Haveli, where the artefacts and important possessions ofthe lastNizam of Hyderabad Princely State Osman Ali Khan AsafJah VII, who held the reign during 1911-1948, most of which were gifts received by him during the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the State held in 1936.
History
The title of HEH was given to Mir Osman Ali Khan only, meaning His Exalted Highness.' The Nizam Museum was to honour him and given his name becausehe had contributed so much to the State of Hyderabad, by establishing many popular facilitiessuch as the Osmania hospital, the University of Osmania, etc besides developing modern roads, establishing railway connections and initiating action for building the Airport in 1936
The Nizam Museum owes its credit to the late nizamwho endeavoured to unite all cultures, without any discrimination based on religion. The culture during the Seventh Nizam’s time was called `ganga-jamunitehzeeb'," while the Nizam also kept safely the Buddhist monuments and restored the frescos of Ajanta during the period 1914-1916.
In fact, the history of the museum is the life achievement of the nizam. The seventh nizam wanted to achieve two things in life, the first one to develop a museum and the other was to make it a centre of learning. The first achievementgot fulfilled on February 18, 2000, when the Nizam museum was opened. The trust which is managing the museum ismarching towards his second achievement, of organising lectures, symposia, seminars, contests and exhibitions relating to the Hyderabad history.
Different Sections in Museum
TheNizammuseum at Hyderabad is a collection mainly of gifts, presentations and souvenirs, made by visitors to the seventh and lastNizam of Hyderabad on the memorable event of the silver jubilee celebrations held in 1936.
Silver replica of various important buildings in Hyderabad and Urdu citations about the NizamH.E.H. Mir Osman Ali Khan form the major sections of the Museum, apart from the Nizam’s amazing wardrobe and a number of items used during the Silver Jubilee celebrations.
Mission
The mission of any museum will be to ensure conservation and protection of cultural goods, as pronounced by the International Council of Museums.
In accordance with it, the Nizam Museum has been established to conserve and protect the valuable artefacts and treasure of gifts that the popoular Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad State had received at the time of the silver jubilee celebrations of this princely State, in accordance to his wish to establish a Museum and to provide a centre of learning.
Exhibitions
The museum showcases wonderful collections which include
- A gold covered wooden throne occupied by the Last Nizam during the city’s Silver Jubilee celebrations
- A golden tiffin box interior of which is decorated by diamonds
- A miniature model of the Jubilee hall
- HEH Mir Osman Ali Khan’s portrait painting in the inlay.
- A writing box made of wood and decorated by superior variety of pearl
- Daggers which are diamond and gold studs
- Silver caskets of different varieties
- Silver perfume containers gifted by the Palvancha Royalty
- Diamond studded Silver cups.
- An Elephant made out of Silver filigree with a mahout riding on it.
- Vintage car display, which includes a Packard, Rolls Royce (1930) and Jaguar Mark V
- The rich wardrobe which the Sixth Nizam of Hyderabad used.
- A 125 to 150 year old lift which is operated manually.
Timings and Ticket Prices
The entrance ticket for the Nizam Museum and the City Museum located at Purani Haveli, both together is Rs 65 for adults and Rs 15 for the Children. The museum is open for public from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on all days except Fridays.
How to Reach
Air
Hyderabad International airport has daily flights operating from all metros and important cities of India and some of the International destinations.
Road
Hyderabad is the Capital City of Andhra Pradesh and is well connected by road from every prominent city of the country, long distance omnibus service is operational from two neighbouring States Tamilnadu and Karnataka, also long distance buses are plying from Mumbai, Pune and other important locations.
Rail
Hyderabad Railway Station is also known as Nampally Railway Station and it comes under the South Central Railway division where a number of fast moving trains have stoppage. The trains passing threou Hyderabad are connecting most of the destinations of the Country. Many trains originate from Hyderabad.
