Indian Institute For Research In Numismatic Studies
Popularly known as Money Museum in Nashik, the Indian Institute of Research in Numismatic Studies [IIRNS] is basically a research centre, besides having a Gallery for the public to view different forms of coins and currencies belonging to wide range of numismatic periods, which include ancient and medieval times. It is located in Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Road, near Anjaneri.
IIRNS offers services with regard to dispensing useful information on coin varieties of India, which is rendered absolutely free to anyone enquiring through land or electronic mail messages.
The museum also maintains a good library where one cn find good collection of numismatic related material and books.
Attached to the Museum is an Institute offering training programmes on fundamentals of Numismatics, besides a publication division releasing research journals and monographs on numismatic matters.
History
Numismatics is the art and science of studying coins, not merely of their structure, but also of different types of coins, their origin, purpose, importance in historical perspective and experts felt that there should be an exclusive academic centre to do studies in this area.
Two notable experts, Dr.ParmeshwariLal Gupta and Dr. K KMeheswari who were passionate about numismatics joined together to initiate action on the formation of the Indian Institute of Research in Numismatic Studies in 1980, which now successfully conducts the following activities:

- Education and Training
- Museum and Library
- Supply of useful items for coin collectors
Among the above, the Institute also maintains a good photo archives on Numismatics and also undertakes research projects in collaboration with other academic institutions.
The Institute was shifted to the present venue in 1984.
Mission
The Institute believes that the coins have enormous heritage value and they are the ones which pave way to identify the different periods of history and culture prevailing in those times. The Institute’s aims and objectives include
- To promote study and research in Numismatics.
- To provide education andspecial training programmes on numismatics
- To facilitate researchers for their studies in numismatics
- To offer training to staff of Archaeological work on numismatics aspects
- To arouse interest in people to know about numismatics, including coin collection as a hobby
- To providing help to Institutional, as well as, Private Museums to prepare coin catalogues
- To assist educational institutions in their studyof history
- To collect numismatics material including photographs,etc
- To establish a Museum to show case therich cultural heritage of India.
Short Training Courses
From the year 1987, the Institute is conducting short term courses in Numismatcs, which include
- Introduction on Numismatics and Methods
- Identification and Classification of coins
- Hoard Sorting of coins
- Decipherment of Legends and Symbols of Coins
- On Threshold Legibility of coins and Identification
- On Hints and Clues for Quick Classification of coins
Collections&Exhibitions
The museum has in its two display sections show casing the following impressive items, separately as coin material and photograph items:
- Coins of India, in ancient period, medieval times and the present era
- Different moulds and dyes used for coin making
- Photographs on numismatic material
- Diorama explaining coin minting process
- Objects of different material such as bronze, terracotta, copper
- Paintings and artefacts of history
How to Reach
Anjaneri, where the Institute is situated, is about 19.5 km. from the main city of Nashik, with a number of local transport providers are available, like auto rickshaws, buses etc.
For reaching Nashik one can travel by air, rail or bus, facilities for all the three modes are available, situated in NH-3 and Mumbai is reachable by road in 185 km distance, while Nashik Railway Station is one of the busy stations in Central Railways.Nashik has an airport with flight schedules to Mumbai and other destinations.
Timings and Ticket Prices
The museum is open for public Monday through Saturday from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm
The Museum is open to the visitors from Mondays to Saturdays(except holidays) from 9.30 am to 5.30 p.m. with a break between 1 pm and 2 pm. There is no entrance fee for visiting the museum.
