Government Museum & Venkatappa Art Gallery
In the capital city of Karnataka Bengaluru, there are a few museums which are of enormous educational value, one among them being Karnataka Government Museum and Art Gallery. This museum started functioning since 1876 and can be called a multipurpose institution, because it has two sections importance, one for exhibiting the antique items and the other expressing the excellence of art. This museum is located at Kasturiba Road, Bengaluru.
This is the right place for art lovers to visit in Bengaluru, because it contains over 600 paintings of famous artists and painters.
History
The art section of this museum called Venkatappa Art Gallery is named after KVenkatappa who was belonging to the family of painters in the nineteenth century attached to the Kingdom, while he was also having musical talents. This museum was designed by Colonel Sankey, a famous architect of Bengaluru, who conceived this temple of art in two parts, one as an exhibition of items of relics of excavations relating to Indus Valley Civilisation particularly those of Mohenjodarao, Vijayanagar and Halebid, which belong to a period 5000 years before.
The museum is also designed to hold sculptural wealth of India, archived from ancient kingdoms such as Hoysala, Gandhara and Nolamba.

The collections of this museum include
- The antiques from Mohenjodarao, Chandravali, Brahmagiri, T. Narasipuretc
- Terracotta wonders from West Bengal
- Sculptures of Hoysala period, also Chalukya and Chola kingdoms
- Various stones, coins and jewellery belonging to ancient times
Exhibitions
Besides the collections available in the museum, the Art Gallery section displays a number of exciting material which include
- the major paintings of K Venkatappa and few other renowned artists like M F Hussain, Hanumaiah, N.S.Bendre, Hariram, YsufArakkai, RekhaRao,Vasudevetc
- Wood carvings and artefacts developed by C P Rajaram
- A separate section called Hebbar Section displaying K KHebbar’spintings.
As one goes through the exhibition of Hebbar’s paintings, one would admire the artistic expression of five elements and celestial region.
There is also exhibition of items belonging to Tipu Sultan’s battle with Britishers, besides a Slab archived from Tipu Sultan’s palace carrying 12 Persian couplets.

The Museum and Art Gallery being Situated in Kasturiba Road of Bengaluru, one can easily reach the place taking public transport, taxi or auto.
Bangalore is well connected by air, rail and road. Bangalore International Airport having flight schedules to all the important destinations of the world reaching Bangalore by air is very easy. Likewise, Bangalore Rail junction is well connected with all the important destinations of the country making rail travel also easy. There are long distance buses to Bangalore for all state head quarters of the neighbouring States, which include Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Hyderabad .
Timings and Ticket Prices
The museum is open for public from 10 am to 5 pm on all days of the week except on Wednesdays which are weekly holidays. The museum is also closed on second Saturdays and other public holidays.
