Ballard Bunder Gatehouse Mumbai
This Gatehouse of Ballar Bunder is mainly a heritage structure of Grade I that has been changed into the maritime museum. This Gatehouse is situated in area of old fort at the estate of Ballard in Mumbai, India. It was manufactured in the year 1920 to memorize the harbor’s repositioning and it is situated at the place of berth of Ballard that is originated to the angle of pier in the approach of jetty. This gatehouse is considering as one of the entry for the awards of Asia-Pacific Heritage of UNESCO 2009 for the conservation of culture heritage. This gatehouse is also considered in the special tour organized by the heritage walk of Naval Dockyard along with BEST and MTDC for museums that was conducted on each Sunday per month by Naval Dockyard. This Ballard Bunder Gatehouse is manufactured with the sandstone of buff Kurla and also this gatehouse is meant to be the Ballard Pier point where public can easily assess and this point is famous for the steamers. A connection between Bombay to Peshawar is through the railway station by the line of Frontier Mail. Due to the expansion of the Indian Naval Dockyard, this gatehouse was disconnected from the visiting of public. Later on to renew the glory of this point it was converted into the small museum at the port of Mumbai.
History
Due to the addition of this gatehouse in the Naval Dockyard for more years, it got neglected and stay hidden in the wall of security. This was later on converted into the office of internal department in year 2002. As the Ballard Estate zone was appreciated in many ways, this was later on restored by the authority of the Naval Dockyard in 2004 mid and renovated in the form of a museum for the public visit.
This Ballard Bunder Gatehouse was later on modified into the estate of Ballard in year 1920 to celebrate the development of the Ballard pier. In the year between 1908 and 1914, the chief architect of the port trust of Bombay named George Wittet had executed this plan of development. This gatehouse became hidden for more than 50 years due to the neglect of the Naval Dockyard after the independence. This building was then restored and modified into the maritime museum in year 2005. This museum was dedicated to the Mumbai city by the Navy.
Collections
The collection of the museum includes a knee high 6 feet tall and giant anchors along with the light on the top portion of the lighthouse. There is also huge collection of the goldsmiths ranges, mill workers, policemen, Mumbai photographs and maps along with models of ships, dhows, trawlers, and fisher folk.
Exhibitions
There were large collection of photographs that are black and white along with wooden models of ships, compasses, and boats manufacturedby the family Wadia in this Ballard Bunder Gatehouse before presents as the ship building of Bombay.
