Bilaspur Mandi Leh Railway
Bilaspur Mandi Leh Railway is one of the tallest mountain railways in India. The proposal for this 5ft 6inches line was made, in order to establish connectivity between Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur with Jammu & Kashmir’s Leh. This line would then be extended to the Kangra Valley Railway to connect Mandi as well. The tracks will be of broad gauge in this line. The line is expected to stretch up to a total length of around 500km. Once completed, this line would become the tallest railway track in India, pushing the current holder of this honour, Qinghai – Tibet Railway to the second level. During 2013, the Central Government announced that this project proposal was sent to the Planning Commission for the necessary approvals. Once all confirmations are received, work would begin on this project.
History
The main reason for preparing a proposal for rail connection between these sectors was to improve the prospects of tourism in both Bilaspur and Leh. With Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir being top tourist destinations, the Indian Government, respective State Governments and the Indian Railways wanted to make the most use of this tourism sector and hence, this railway line was planned. A feasibility study on this sector was studied and the report was submitted to the Planning Commission for its review and approval.
Route
The route that has been proposed as of now is the following – starting from Leh, the train will traverse through stations like Choglamshahr, Sindhughat, Shey, Thicksey, Rabirpora, Chang-Karu, Upshi Junction, Rumtse, Tanglangla, Debring, Pang, Lachalungla, Sarchu, Baralachala, Dharcha, Jispa, Keylong, Tandi, Sissu, Rohtang Hault, Manali, Naggar, Kulu, Bhuntar, Aut, Pandoh, Mandi and finally reach Bilaspur junction.
Services
The Bilaspur Mandi Leh Railway line, once completed will reduce the travel timing of the passengers to a great extent. Currently, a trip from Leh to Delhi takes around 4 days to complete. With the completion of this rail line, this travel time would be reduced phenomenally to just about 2 days. The services that this line proposes to offer are plenty. The district of Lehi in Jammu and Kashmir is military dominated, hence this line would surely be a blessing for transporting freight and people.
Time Table
The exact details of the train schedule on this line are not yet known, as the proposal is still waiting for approval from the Planning Commission.
