Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is a town in the close vicinity of Agra city was established by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1569.  After winning two battles wins of Chittor and Ranthambhour, it was decided by Akbar to make its capital on a new place.  In this series, the establishment of this town was done. Fatehpur Sikri is located at 37 kilometers from Agra.  This town was also established to pay the respect to great Sufi saint Saleem Chishti.  Initially the name of the city was given as Fatehabad, after victory of Ranthambhour and Chittor.  But later it changed to Fatehpur Sikri.   This is one of the finest Mughal establishments in India. From the window of history, it can be understand that Akbar was interested to construct a new city and he decided the architectural pattern.  This city was constructed in pure Islamic style of architecture. Akbar also consulted with various architects and asked them to produce a combined design which looks a unique outlook after including of different techniques.  The originality of the architecture style must be alive.  After a thorough discussion and deep planning the design was prepared, approved and construction executed.  15 years long time was invested in construction of this city.  Soon after the construction, use of Imperial Complex was stopped due to some technical problems.

Presently, the maximum portion of Imperial Complex has been converted in man less position. The wall which was erected during construction is still surrounding the area. Later it was utilized by various offices, municipal houses in British period, and presently this building has only the ruins and notified as world heritage building.  In the time of construction, this building was used by “Silk Spinning” and “Fabric of Hairs’ manufacturing.  The village named Sikri still exists in the close vicinity of this building.

Attractions

There are some attractive places are located in Fatehpur Sikri.

Buland Darwaza

This is a huge gate which is located at the southern part of mosque (Jama masjid).  This Darwaza is 54 ft in height. This gate was constructed with the mosque after five years of completion. This gate was an indication of Victory.  This Darwaza was constructed in 1576-1577.

Jama Masjid

This is a grand mosque which was constructed during 1571-1572.  This mosque was constructed in Indian style of architecture.  This is the mosque, to which the Buland Darwaza was added after five year in 1576.

Salim Chishti Tomb

This tomb is constructed with white marble for Sufi saint Saleem Chishti. Inside the tomb, the grave of Sufi saint is present. “Mother of pearls” was used to make the grave of saint.   In the left side of this tomb, sandstone of Islam Khan is present.  Islam Khan was a General in Mughal Royal Army.

Diwan-e-Aam

Diwan-e-aam was the hall for general public meeting.  This building is constructed in many monuments in different cities of India. This building is made like a cricket Pavilion.

Diwan-e-Khas

This building is also constructed in the various cities of India.  In this building the meetings of the rules were conducted with special personalities or courtiers.  This is octagonal shaped building.

There are some other attractive buildings in the city which are of tourist interest.

How to Reach

This city is accessible from all the means of transportation.

By Air

Agra is the nearest airport to reach this place. This city is located at 39 kilometers from Agra airport.

By Rail

Agra is the nearest railway station.  Better and frequent road conveyances are available as this is world famous tourist place.  Though, local transportation is little bit expensive.

By Road

Various tourist buses and taxies are available for road transport.  Delhi Mathura road is the main way to reach this city.  A small turn is needed from Agra. Total distance is 39 kilometers.
