Jammu & Kashmir Chemday Monastery
At a distance of 40 km from Leh in the east direction is located Chemday monastery. The history of the monastery goes back to 17th century and the location of the monastery is on the side of the mountain. The monastery has its association with the royals of Dharmaraja Singey Namgial by Lama Tagsang Raschen. The holy image of Padmasambahva that is as high as one floor of the building is part of the monastery. There are various shrines in the compound of monastery. The sacred dances are performed in the 9th month of Tibetan calendar on 28th and 29th day. To perform the dance the Monks gather to enjoy wearing a sacred mask. Many people gather from nearby places together to take part to celebrate the festival. The preparation of the sacred dance begins a week ahead by practicing meditation. The second day of the festival is marked as day for performing Mandala puja in monastery. The monastery is 365 years old.
How to Reach
By Air
The closest airport is in Ladakh but the other major airport that is close to reach Ladakh is Jammu where flights from all over India ply. Taxis are available to reach Chemday Monastery.
By Rail
The nearest Rail line to reach is Jammu and it takes a journey of two days to reach from Jammu to the monastery. Taxis can be taken from Jammu to reach monastery.
By Road
Chemday monastery is at a distance of 40 km from Leh and it takes 2 hours to reach the monastery.
