The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution which is a Government aided ministry has important functions including maintaining Bureau of Indian Standards, Central Vigilance Committee on public distribution system formation and consumer complaints Redressal council. This ministry is divided in to two different departments, one is the Department of Food and Public Distribution and other is the Department of Consumer Affairs.
The main objectives of these departments are achieved through a public distribution system to ensure that farmers get the remunerative and reasonable rates and prices are paid for the supply of grains from their end. The department of consumer affairs deals with policies of consumer co-operatives and pricing of goods and services.

The two departments of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution system are Department of Food and Public Distribution system and Department of Consumer affairs. The Public Distribution system is formulated to take care of the food security system and distribution of food to the poor at a subsidised rate. This relates to major commodities like Wheat, Rice, Sugar, and Kerosene. Also, this department takes care of the proper distribution of the surplus yields from crops during good seasons and also they implement the Food Corporation Act 1964 in a strict manner and formulate a national policy to ensure farm price support, operations and procurement storage and to preserve them in a prudent manner. This happens to be the largest network in the country with over 5 lakh Fair Price Shops in the country.
The department of Consumer Affairs is the one which takes care of the standard Indian Standards, and weights and measures. The main functions include - Standards of Weights and measures, Bureau of Indian Standards, Consumer Co operatives, Forward markets commission, Mumbai, Price monitoring and making goods available under essential commodities act, Consumer Protection Act, Consumer Welfare funds, Internal Trade and control of future training and Forward Contract areas. It also regulates the availability of the goods and takes stringent action against hoarding of goods.  Take adequate steps to avoid pilferages and educate the public in this area.
