The district of Solapur is located in the state of Mahashtra. The district headquarters of is situated in Solapur city. This district is a chief junction of the north-south railway line.

The name Solapur has been taken from two different words “Sola” which denotes sixteen along with “Pur” which refers to village. Presently Solapur hasmore than sixteen villages.

Solapur district was earlier ruled by a number of dynasties. Previously, the current district of Solapur was a portion of Satara, Pune and Ahmednagar districts. It was declared as a sub-district of Ahmednagar in 1838. It got the recognition of an individual district of Maharashtra in the year 1960.
