Ratnagiri establishes itself as a port city on the Arabian Sea and is situated in the southern west part of Maharashtra. It is a part of Konkan. Ratnagiri came under the control of Satara Kings in 1731 and subsequently succeeded by British in 1818. Ratnagiri comprises of a population of 100000 males and females.

The major food in these areas is Fish, Rice and Wheat and people generally wear clothing made by cotton. Fishing is one of the major occupations of people here. The most prominent feature of Ratnagiri is the “Alphonso” Mangoes, commonly termed as “Hapus”. This is an export quality mango and is much cherished by the people all around.

Ratnagiri marks its presence in the history by being the birthplace of the great national freedom fighter “Bal Gangadhar Tilak” commonly known as ‘Lokmanya’ and the great Maharishi Dhondo Keshav Karve, a social reformer and educationist.

The famous novel “The Glass Palace” written by the great novelist ‘Amitav Ghosh’ also features the Ratnagiri District. One more feather in the hat of Ratnagiri is the location of Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project in its territory.
