The district of Akola is located in the state of Maharashtra and its headquarters lying in the Akola city. The district came into existence in the year 1998.

In the beginning, the district of Akola was under Nizam. Later in 1853, when Nizam failed to pay the debt and considerable amount of debt fell due, it was passed over to the East India Company. Finally, in the year 1906, it was made a part of the state of Maharashtra. In 1998, the state got the status of a separate district.

The physical feature of Akola can be separated in three portions. A part of it lies on the foot of the Satpura Mountains and the middle portion lies in the Purna or Panyaghat plains. The third portion is found on the apex of the Ajanta range which is the Balaghat. The Penanga and Purna are the chief rivers flowing through the district. The other rivers which flow through the district include:

The climate of the district is tropical. The chief crops that are grown in the region are jawar and cotton. Agriculture is the main occupation of Akola.
