According to the 2001 census Ujjain district, with its total 6,091 km² area, had the recorded population of 1,709,885. Its border is shared through the Shajapur district on northeast and east, while southeast border touches the Dewas district. Indore and Dhar districts cover Ujjain from south and southwest portions accordingly. The western and northwestern border is covered by the neighboring Ratlam district. Coming under the Ujjain Division, this district is known in the whole state with its historic value.
