Neemuch district of MP is internally known for a different reason. With administrative headquarters in the Neemuch town this district produces largest number of opium in the whole world today. According to 2001 census total population of Neemuch district was recorded 700,000. It comes under Ujjain Division of MP and shares at its western and northern border with neighboring Rajasthan state. Eastern and southern border of Neemuch is surrounded by Mandsaur district.

It was on June 30, 1998 that Neemuch district was formally created. Neemuch, Manasa and Jawad tehsils of the then Mandsaur district was separated to create it. History describes that Neemuch was once power centre of British rulers. The region was cantonment town where British North India Mounted Artillery and Cavalry Headquarters (NIMACH) were located. It was also used as a headquarters of Crown's Representative Police Force in 1939.

Present Neemuch district houses largest CRPF cantonment. It has population density of 170 /km2 with sex ratio of 950 per 1000 males. Its tehsils Neemuch, Manasa and Jawad are part of Mandsaur Lok Sabha Constituency that also includes neighboring district Mandsaur. Neemuch has three Assembly seats and connected to rest part of MP through NH79 crossing it.
