Having been acknowledged in whole MP as an enriched district, Hoshangabad has its headquarters in Hoshangabad town. Its location at Narmada River valley distinguishes it that Narmada borders in north. A part of Bhopal its total area is 5408.23 km². Districts of Raisen, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara and Betul borders Hoshangabad district from north, east, southeast and south. Its western and northwestern borders touch neighboring Harda and Sehore districts.

This district was divided into two in 1998 and western portion carved as new district, Harda. At present Hoshangabad remains vibrant with Pachmarhi hills that attract hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers. Pachmarhi hills were the summer capital of British rulers in pre-independent India form where they ruled Central Provinces and Berar. It is today a great source of revenue through tourism.

According to 2001 census reports total population of Hoshangabad district was 1,085,011 (571,796 males and 513,215 females). Sex ratio was alarmingly 898 per 1000 males. The census also recorded total literacy rate of Hoshangabad district at 54.11%. Male literacy was 67.19% and female literacy rate was pitiably 39.29%. It has eleven colleges and seven post graduate colleges besides schools but it is ironical that its literacy rate is still low.
