The district with its administrative headquarters in the Damoh town has the total population 1,083,949 (according to 2001 census). This district is known for its historical monuments and the enriched past whose signs are still available in various parts of the district. One such historically important town Nohata, located on the River Gauraya banks, used to be the capital city of Chandela Rajputs. This city still has several temples.

Damoh district houses many ancient forts out of which the one at the Rajnagar village reminds appealing Mughal rule in India. Similar is the case with Singhorgarh fort which had been built by Raja Vain Bason and it still exists in this district.
