Shimla Kalka
IRCTC started a Special Heritage Train Package having Saloon coaches and combination such as (RA-4+ RA-67 + CT-12 & 13 + 02 FCZ) Ex to and fro journey from Kalka to Shimla or Shimla to Kalka and that too a Single Journey.
The Kalka Shimla Railways is an amazing blend of technical proficiency along with the engineering expertise which was constructed in 1903. It is one of the famous hill railways among rail enthusiasts and tourists throughout the world.
Popularly called as UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2008, the narrow gauge (2'6") consists of a ruling gradient of 1:20. The distance covered by train is 96 km and goes through 102 tunnels along with over 800 bridges as well as viaducts.
When one travels through Kalka - Shimla Railway there is a picturesque view of Himalayas seen from the Shivalik foot hills at Kalka to various significant points like Dharampur, Barog, Solan, Kandaghat and finally Shimla.
Route
The Kalka–Shimla Railway was meant for connecting Shimla, which was regarded as capital of India during summer in the rules of British, with the rail system of India. Today, Shimla is the capital city of Himachal Pradesh while Kalka falls under the district of Panchkula, Haryana. There are landscaped views found across the route which makes the tourists on this line spell bound. While leaving Kalka, 656 m above sea level, the railway gives an entry to the foothills and soon commences its climb.
Stations
There is a panoramic view of Himalayas from the Sivalik foot hills at Kalka to various significant points like Dharampur, Kandaghat, Solan, Taradevi, Salogra, Barog Summerhill and finally Shimla at a height of 2,076 m. All the 20 stations found in between are found next to bridges, meant for the labor building the bridges for taking rest there.
Tunnels
Actually 107 tunnels were constructed on track of Kalka Shimla. In the year 1930 they were numbered again and 4 of them had been discarded leaving only 103. The tunnel number 46 in the year 2006 was also dismantled so today just 102 are in use. The tunnel number 103, which is the last tunnel of Shimla, is a popular landmark of this town.
Infrastructure
The line consists of bridges 864 in number and one of them is 18.29 m plate girder span along with steel truss. Others being viaducts having multi-arched galleries such as the ancient aqueducts of Roman. Historically, Bridge No. 493, called as the "Arch Gallery", located between Kanoh and Kandaghat stations, is a bridge arched shaped in 3 stages, built with stone masonry. Bridge No. 226, lying between Dharampur and Sonwara is an arch gallery bridge with 5 tier galleries having multiple spans, built with stone masonry and a deep valley is bridged abounded by high peaks.
The railway consists of a ruling gradient having 1 in 33 or 3%. It comprise of 919 curves, and the sharpest one is 48 degrees. The line comes to an end at an elevation of 2076 m, climbing from 656 meters (2,152 ft) at Shimla. This line actually used 42 lb/yd (21 kg/m) rail but it was further laid again to 60 lb/yd (30 kg/m) rail.
