Kannur district derived its name from ‘Cannanore’, an ancient village in Kerala. Situated at an elevation of 1.02 m, Kannur is the fourth largest urban settlement. This district was established in 1867. In the north Malabar region, it is considered as the largest city. As per research, Kannur is considered as one of the ten best cities to live in!

Kannur is known for its loom industries. It is also the main source of employment and business in this region. Folk dances are performed at the temples on the occasion of various festivals. Theyyam is the native dance form and performing arts. Apart from that, Kannur is famous for its clear sea water beaches and handloom industry.
