Tumkur district is situated to in the southern part of Karnataka. The headquarters of the district lies in Tumkur city. The area of the district is 10648 sq. km. The district is surrounded by Mandya, Chitradurga, Hassan, Chikmaglur and Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. The district was formed in the year 1966.

The name of the place is derived from the old name of Tumakuru. In some inscriptions found in the 10th century AD had the name Tummegooru. In Tumkur district hills with an average height of 1200 mts can be found here. The valleys in between the hills form a watershed between rivers kaveri and Krishna. The hills of Devarayanadurga are filled with forests where wild boars, bears and leopards.

The district has many temples in which some of the finest sculptors have been sculpted by Amarshilpi Jakanachari, a legendary sculptor famous all over south India. Some of the places that are worth visiting in Tumkur district include:

• Devarayana Durga: This place is a set of hills. Often called DD Hills, the place has many temples and rock formations to offer.
• Goravanahalli: Goravana Halli is famous for its Shri Maha Lakshmi temple. It is said that the idol of Shri Maha Lakshmi originated by itself and a temple was built around it.
• Shivaganga: Shivaganga has temple dedicated to Lord Gangadhara and Honna Devi. A fresh water spring called Patala Ganga is also famous here.
