Shimoga is a district, which is located in the central region of Karnataka. The district is bordered by Haveri, Devanagare, Chikmaglur, Udipi and Uttara Kannada districts. The total area of Shimoga district is 8465 sq. km. The average height above sea level is 600 meters.

The name of the district is associated with Lord Shiva. It is believed that the earlier name of the region was Shiva Mukha or Shiva Muugu. The name got corrupted to Shimoga. Shimoga was part of Mauryan empire. The region was later under the rule of Satavahanas, Kadambas of Banavasi, Badami Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Kalyani Chalukyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Rayas. The kingdom was later occupied by the Marathas, The Mysore kingdom and later on after independence, it was formed a district in the state of Karnataka.
