Mysore, is one of the southern districts in the state of Karnataka. Mysore is surrounded by Kerala, Mysore district, Kodagu district, Chamrajanagar and Hassan districts. Mysore is known very famous for the Mysore Palace of the Wodeyar dynasty who have ruled the State of Mysore from the 1700s till Indian independence.

The origin of Mysore can be traced back in Indian mythology. The old name of the place was Mahishasura. The name got corrupted to Mysore. On Chamunda Hill there is a temple constructed in honour of Goddess Chamundeshwari. This temple is very near to Mysore city.

Gangas was the earliest known dynasties ruling this place, which recorded date back to 400 AD. Rashtrakutas started their rule in the 8th century AD. Soon after Cholas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Rayas had took over the place. After the downfall of Vijayanagar empire in 1565 AD, the Wodeyars took over Mysore. In mid 1700s Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan became the de facto rulers of Mysore. With Tipu’s death in 1799, Wodeyars regained their full control over Mysore. But, still they were under the constant scrutiny by the East India Company.

The district has a good water supply from Kaveri river which flows through the northern parts of the district. A dam was built across the river by the name Krishna Raja Sagara which lies in the northern part of the district. Agriculture is the chief occupation in the district producing cotton, groundnut, jowar, maize, ragi, rice, sugarcane, sunflower and tur.
