Hassan, is a district in the southern part of Karnataka. The district is famous for its historical background. It is also famous today as the district houses the Master Control Facility of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The district was a part of Mauryan Empire under the rule of Chandragupta Maurya.

The other dynasties that ruled Hassan district include Western Ganga dynasty of Talkad, Hoysala dynasty, Vijayanagar dynasty, Kaledi Nayakas and later on it was under the Mysore kingdom.

Historically, the place was a thriving Jain centre where archeological evidences such as inscriptions in Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil, Marathi, Marwari and Mahajani languages was found here. Many temples were built in this area around the 10th and 11th centuries AD under the Hoysalas. It was the Hoysala dynasty that made possible for Hassan to have earned a great place in the history of Karnataka.

Some of the architectural wonders in Hassan district include:

Belur: Belur was the capital of the Hoysala kings. The place is famous for the Chennakesava Temple which was built in the year 1116 AD. The sculptures at this temple are considered as one of the finest in South India.

Halebeed: Halebeed is also another place where, the Hoysalas erected beautiful temples with stone work of art. The twin temples of Hoysalashwara and Kedareshwara include the scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagavath sculpted on the walls of these temples.

Shravanabelagola: This town was a prominent centre for Jain culture and art. The centre of attraction is a giant monolithic statue of Lord Gomateshwara.

Other temples in the district include Bucheswara Temple, Veernarayana Temple, Yoganarasimha Temple, Bhuvaneshwari and Laskminarasimha Temple, etc.
