Gulbarga, is one of the northern districts in Karnataka. The name of the district is from Persian origin, where “Gul” means a flower and “berg” means a leaf. Thus the name Gulbarga. The total area of the district is 10,951 sq. km. The district is surrounded by districts of Maharashtra which include Bijapur, Solapur and Osmanabad and Hyderabad district of Andhra Pradesh.

Archeological evidence points that the city was once ruled by Rashtrakutas in the 6th century. Later on the city was taken over by the Chalukyas, Yadavas of Devagiri, Hoysalas and finally the city fell into the hands of Bahmani Sultans in 13th century. During the British rule, the district of Gulbarga was a part of State of Hyderabad under the NIzam rule.

The district is situated at an elevation of 300 to 700 meters above sea level. The type of soil found in Gulbarga is black soil. Rivers Krishna and Bhima flow through the district. Agriculture is the major occupation in the state. The major crop produce of the district includes Bajra, toor, sugarcane, groundnut, sunflower, sesame, castor, black gram, jowar, wheat, cotton, ragi and Bengal gram.
