Dakshina Kannada is a southern district in Karnataka. This district is bordered by Udipi, Hassan, Kodagu and Kasaragod districts. Mangalore is the headquarters for the district. The old name of the district was Kanara. In 1860, the British divided the region into North Kanara and South Kanara. North Kanara was under Bombay Presidency and South Kanara was under Madras Presidency.

In the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udipi and Kasaragod, Tulu and Konkani are the major language and hence they were collectively called Tulu Nadu. The history of the place dates back to 8th and 14th centuries AD.

The total area of the district is 4866 sq. km. With sea on the west and the Western Ghats to the east and with rivers like Netravathi, Kumaradhara, Phalguni, Shambhavi, Pavanje and Payaswini the place is evergreen. Rice, Black Pepper, Cocoa, Areca nut and Coconut are among the chief crops produced in the district. The crops excluding rice have a great commercial value.
