Chikmagalur district is in Karnataka. The district is famous for coffee and tea plantations in. In fact, it was the first place where coffee was cultivated. The mountains of Mullayanagiri, which are part of the western ghats is the place where these coffee and tea plantations are cultivated.

Chikmagalur was home to Hoysala dynasty. One of the Hoysala kings, Veera Ballala II had built the Amriteshwara Temple. The introduction of coffee to India was done by Baba Budan in the year 1670. On his pilgrimage to Mecca, he stumbled upon coffee in Arabia and got some seeds from there, which he planted them here in the hills. These hills are now known as Baba Budan Hills in his honour.

The highest peak in Chikmagalur is Mullayangiri which stands at 1926 mts above sea level. The district has 30% forests. With rivers such as Tunga Bhadra, Hemavathi, Vedavathi, flowing all round the year, there is no water shortage in this district. Cultivation of rice, ragi, jowar, maize, red gram, horse gram, green gram, black gram and Bengal gram, groundnuts, sesamum, sunflower, castor, sugarcane, tobacco are also grown here apart from coffee. Iron, magnetite and granite are also found in the hills surrounding this district.

Some of the tourist spots in this region include Hills stations such as Kemmangudi, Kudremukh, Mullayanagiri, Baba Budan Giri, Manikyadhara water falls, Kallathigiri waterfalls, Hebbe waterfalls, Shanti waterfalls, Hanumana Gundi waterfalls, etc.
